  • Indianapolis is home to 17 museums, including the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the nation's 7th-largest general art museum, and the Indianapolis Children's Museum, the largest children's museum in the world.

  • The mayor created a Cultural Development Commission to promote local arts.

  • The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Americans for the Arts awarded Mayor Bart Peterson the “Government Leadership in the Arts” award.


Indianapolis Museum of Art


The Indianapolis Museum of Art is among the largest general art museums in the U.S., with a collection of 42,000 works.  Highlights include: the Samuel Josefowitz Collection of Gauguin and the School of Pont-Aven; the Holliday Collection of Neo-Impressionism, featuring the work of Georges Seurat and his followers; the largest collection of works by J.M.W. Turner outside of Great Britain; one of the most outstanding collections of Japanese Edo-period paintings in the nation; and more than 2,000 objects in the African art collection.

The museum is currently undergoing an expansion that will increase its gallery space by 50%.

Children’s Museum of Indianapolis


The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the largest children’s museum in the world with 433,500 square feet of exhibit space.  The museum houses 11 major galleries that explore the physical and natural sciences, history, world cultures and the arts.
