Quick Facts & Links
  • Indiana Avenue was the center of Jazz in Indianapolis and help launch the careers of jazz great Wes Montgomery and The InkSpots.

  • Woodruff Place was the city's first "suburb" and was the setting for Booth Tarkington's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Magnificent Amberson's.

  • Father Edward Sorins, founder of the University of Notre Dame, owned much of the land of the present day St. Joseph neighborhood.  It is speculated that the sale of this land helped finance the founding of Notre Dame.

Among the hundreds of neighborhoods in Indianapolis, there are several Historic areas and districts.  These unique neighborhoods and commercial districts have seen a tremendous amount of rehabilitation in the last twenty years.  Many of these areas are located in or near downtown, offering convenient access to the many attractions downtown has to offer.

For more information about historic neighborhoods, visit the Division of Historic Preservation web site at www.indygov.org/histpres.
